Archives - Noises Off
by Michael FraynDirected by Keith ThompsonSaturday 5th – Saturday 12th May 1990 in the AuditoriumThis play opens with a touring company dress-rehearsing Nothing On, a conventional farce — a hilarious melee. Cheery char, outraged wife and squeaky blonde stampede in and out — voices rise and trousers fall. But Noises Off is a farce about farce, and in the brilliantly inventive second and third acts we see the play-within-a-play undermined. Complex personal relationships backstage, and a plate of sardines and an alcoholic has-been, neither of which are ever in the right place — this play mixes mockery and homage — a great farce.
