Three monologues

Talking HeadsThree exceedingly good monologues presenting some of Alan Bennett’s best known and best loved characters.

A Cream Cracker Under the Settee

Directed by Belinda Gee

Famously portrayed by Thora Hird, this monologue reveals the life of Doris who has fallen over in her home and spends the day alone and unable to get up. She reminisces about her life, family, husband and child whilst eschewing the home help’s suggestions of moving to an old people’s home.

A Chip in the Sugar

Directed by Cliff Francis

Originally portrayed by Alan Bennett himself, this monologue reveals the story of Graham, an older man living at home with his widowed mother. Graham has some mental health issues and has spent time in an institution. His peaceful life is threatened when his mother plans to remarry.

Her Big Chance

Directed by Rob Graham

One of Julie Walters’s earlier performances, this is the story of Lesley, an actress failing to find the success she craves. Neither a good actress nor very worldly wise, she allows herself to be taken advantage of in the hope that, this time, a liaison will lead to a starring role.
