Archives - The Tempest
by William ShakespeareDirected by Mervyn LloydSaturday 5th – Saturday 12th May 1984 in the AuditoriumIn 1609 an English ship carrying colonists to Virginia was caught in a violent storm and wrecked on the island of Bermuda. The survivors contrived from the wreckage a boat which they called Endeavour and eventually made their way home. Tradition has it that their log-book somehow became known to Shakespeare and gave him the opening scene for this most magical of all his works. The evidence is the famous reference to “the still-vexed Bermoothes”. From this starting point, he developed a lyrical play which has enchanted audiences for all but four-hundred years. Festivals
