Barn Youth Theatre

You can be a youth member of the Barn Theatre without being a member of the Youth Theatre. This entitles you to audition for any Barn Theatre shows throughout the year. Please see the membership section of the website.

Barn Senior Youth Theatre (16–21 years)

The Senior Youth Theatre, known as BARN HERMES, provides an opportunity for young people aged from 16–21 to have some theatre training and gain experience in performance, backstage work and theatre practices and etiquette. Members are expected to attend weekly drama workshop/training sessions on Mondays during term time 8.00pm–10.00pm. The sessions will include improvisation, play readings, characterisation and group work. In addition, the Senior Youth Theatre may be preparing a main stage presentation or for a show to be entered into the Welwyn Garden City Youth Drama Festival.

For the more able and experienced, there may also be an opportunity to work on one or more of the Barn's Main Season Productions in the main theatre. Any young people interested in working hard at stage performances or backstage theatre work are always most welcome.

Barn Junior Youth Theatre (9–15 years)

We have three offerings:

  • The youngest group for ages 9 to 12, called BARN PIGWIDGEON, meets on Mondays 4.00pm–5.30pm.
  • The middle group for ages 10 to 12, called BARN HEDWIG, meets on Tuesdays 5.30pm–7.30pm.
  • The oldest group for ages 13 to 15, called BARN ERROL, meets on Mondays 5.45pm–7.45pm.
The aim of all groups is to help young people learn basic stage techniques, including voice production, characterisation, comic timing, physical theatre and improvisation. The Junior Youth Theatre usually enters a production in the Welwyn Garden City Youth Drama Festival and all members are able to audition for parts in one or two main stage productions each year. Smaller-scale performances also take place in our new studio facility.

Holiday Workshops

We also hold Holiday Workshops at Easter and during the Summer Holidays, open to any youth members of the Barn and outside of the Barn, aged 10-21. The idea being that the assembled group produce a complete show in 1 week, performing twice on the last day. These run as 1–week slots Mon–Fri for approximately 6 hours per day and costing usually £100 per student per week. Information will be posted in Barn News and by email.

How to join

Firstly please contact the Youth Theatre Administrator (details below) to see if there is current space in any of the groups. Please do not contact tutors direct for this information. If there isn’t current space, your details will be placed on a waiting list.

Once a place is confirmed, we ask you to complete an Application Form by email so that we have your details for insurance purposes.

A signed copy of the Application Form and your initial cheque for the term fee MUST be brought to the first class. If you wish to pay by online banking this MUST be done prior to the first class.

We appreciate that not every child will enjoy or settle into a class, so your cheque will only be cashed after they have attended 2 classes, unless we are informed of their not wishing to continue. Online payments will be refunded promptly for the same reason.

If a student joins mid-term then an appropriate apportionment of the fee is made.

Once the fee is paid it is not refundable (except for the reasons above), should a student leave prior to the end of term.
