Archives - Lilies on the Land

by The Lions Part

Directed by Louise Wallace

Friday 12th – Saturday 20th February 2016 in the Auditorium

Land girls, Churchill and the white cliffs of Dover

A unique theatrical tribute to those plucky women of the ‘forgotten army’, who toiled the land, leaving behind families and bereft of their home comforts. The text is based on a variety of sources including hundreds of letters and interviews with real land girls, and is also layered with period songs and extracts from one or two rather famous speeches. The result is a theatrical collage moving back and forth through time, where we share the reality of life on the land and recognise the hardships and humour that often went side by side. We see the personal journeys of four women, from different walks of life and parts of the country, as they slowly get to grips with their new lives. Be prepared for a lot of laughs and perhaps a few tears as well.

“Magnificent and very moving – a lovely mixture of poignancy and humour”
Joan Clifford (WLA 0101337)

“Powerfully truthful, absolutely accessible, rich in emotion, and glowing with laughter...”
Peter Cheeseman CBE, former Artistic Director, New Vic Theatre, Stoke
