Celebrating the Past - Enchanting the Present!
In June 1925, a magical tradition began. Local residents transformed a woodland hollow in Sherrardspark Wood into an open-air stage for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream – the very first production in what became known as The Dell.
Now, 100 years on, the Bard’s timeless comedy of fairies, lovers, and mistaken identities returns to Welwyn Garden City – this time in the Barn Theatre, the spiritual heir to that early tradition of community performance.
Set to be a highlight of the Barn’s 2024 – 25 season, this special anniversary production pays tribute to the vibrant theatrical roots of the Garden City, rekindling the creativity and community spirit that first brought The Dell to life.
While we weren’t permitted to return to the original site, even for a one-off anniversary event, we bring its story with us. From makeshift pine green rooms to packed trains from London, The Dell once enchanted thousands.
Join us as we celebrate its centenary in true Shakespearean style!
