5th – 12th February 1972

A dramatisation of Miss M.E. Braddon’s best-selling novel of 1862. C.H. Hazlewood, actor and prolific playwright of the period, turned it into a powerful melodrama which combines a strong plot with a fascinating picture of mid-Victorian Society life. The Barn Club’s President, Dame Flora Robson, achieved an early triumph in the title role, under Tyrone Guthrie’s direction at Cambridge Festival Theatre.
