FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

The Herbal Bed

by Peter Whelan
Directed by Hugh Croydon
20th – 28th April 2001

An emotional thriller, based on actual events which occurred in Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613, when William Shakespeare’s eldest daughter Susanna was publicly accused of having a sexual liaison with Rafe Smith, a married neighbour and family friend.

In the slander case which follows, her husband, the respected physician John Hall, strives desperately to clear her name. But what really happened that night in the herbal garden?

A thought-provoking play from the author of The Accrington Pals.
