FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

Mrs Warren’s Profession

By Bernard Shaw
Directed by Roy Brewer
28th September – 5th October 1974

Written in 1894 but banned until 1925 — not because of ‘rudery’ or bad language — but because Shaw justifies poor girls choosing to enter a brothel instead of starving or even dying through working in one of the factories of the period.

The play is one of Shaw’s best among his earlier works — witty, strongly plotted and with considerable Women’s Lib topicality.
