A warm-hearted but discontented teacher, Rose, feels frustrated in all walks of life: at her school in a tough Midlands neighbourhood and in her relations with her mother, her colleagues and her dull husband. The efforts she makes to overcome these frustrations provide an outspoken plan, full of humour but a challenge to prejudice.
