FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

Steel Magnolias

by Robert Harling
Directed by David Thompson
28th March – 4th April 1992
Thanks to Academy Hairdressing, Welwyn Garden City for hair and wig dressing, Saks Hair and Beauty, The Howard Centre, Welwyn Garden City, for hairdressing and make–up and Hairline of Harpenden for the loan of hairdryers.

First produced in New York in 1987, Steel Magnolias opened at the Lyric Theatre in 1989. Just released for amateur production, the Barn will be one of the first companies to present this humorous and moving play.

Set in small town America, the play centres around the lives of six women who meet in Truvy’s beauty parlour. Over a three year period Clairee, Ouiser, M’Lynn and Shelby, Truvy’s regular clients, and Annelle, her assistant, share their good and bad fortune, providing support for one another through birth, marriage and death.

This warmhearted and sparkling comedy is, above all else, about the strength and purposefulness of some very real characters.

Much to be enjoyed but bring a handkerchief!
