FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

Present Laughter

by Noël Coward
Directed by Louis Davis
23rd – 31st October 1998

This is Coward’s centenary year and Present Laughter is an absolute classic comedy.

Written in 1939 by delayed by the war until 1942, it centres on Gary Essendine, a popular actor (originally played by Coward) who revels in being a temperamental prima donna. His antics and love affairs require the most careful handling both by his secretary and his manager.

The one person who can really cope with him is his wife, Liz. Separated some time ago, they are still good friends. He has become more deeply involved that he intended with his manager’s wife, Joanna. When on the eve of his South African tour it becomes plain that he cannot extricate himself and is on the brink of a nervous breakdown, Liz steps in and takes charge.
