Spider’s Web

By Agatha Christie
Directed by Maureen Davies
28th October – 5th November 2016

Not only whodunit, but who is the victim and why was he 'dun'?

Spider's WebClarissa, the young wife of a foreign office diplomat, delights in tweaking the sensibilities of her more serious friends by playing a game she calls ‘supposing’ –imagining a difficult situation and finding out how people would respond. But Clarissa’s light-hearted games become deadly serious when she discovers the body of a murdered man in her own drawing room. If that weren’t bad enough, her husband is on his way home with an important foreign politician for secret talks. The body must be got rid of quickly: no way can her husband arrive home when police are swarming all over the premises. Clarissa decides to dispose of the body and persuades her three house-guests to help. But before she can get the corpse off the premises, a policeman arrives at the house stating he has received an anonymous telephone call informing him that a murder has been committed on the premises. Now Clarissa must keep the body hidden and try to convince the sceptical inspector it must have been a hoax call and no murder has taken place as she and her guests have been home all evening playing bridge. The inspector will not leave until he has made a search of the house. Mrs Peake, the resident gardener, shows the inspector a secret door and when opened the hidden body is discovered. And so the search begins – why has the man been murdered, what was the man doing in her house, why was he murdered in the house and more to the point, who is the murderer in their midst?
