Blackpool, 1976. The driest summer in two hundred years. The beaches are packed. The hotels are heaving. In the sweltering backstreets, far from the choc ices and donkey rides, the Webb Sisters are returning to their mother’s run-down guest house, as she lies dying upstairs.
When memories from their youth come flooding back, the sisters must confront their past and untangle a web of secrets, betrayals and profound emotional bonds. The play moves effortlessly between two time periods twenty odd years apart to show the development of the sisters’ relationships and the foundations for future tensions.
Relentlessly entertaining the play draws the audience into a richly comic, yet profoundly tragic tale of working class life and the lengths parents will go to for the sake of securing a better future for their children.
The Hills of California was first performed at the Harold Pinter theatre in London’s West End in 2024, directed by Sam Mendes, before transferring to Broadway, New York later in the same year.

The Hills of California
The Hills of California has no specific diversity message within its narrative. The play will be cast with complete neutrality on gender, race and ethnicity. Although parts of its story and certain roles lend themselves to gender, ethnicity and age specificity, these will be open to artistic judgement permitting maximum flexibility to achieve the most diverse cast possible from our membership.
