Jazz at the Barn: Kind of Blue – Live

24th July 2026 at 8pm

The best of Hertfordshire and London's jazz scenes in an intimate setting.

For the final gig of the season, local musician Matt Ward presents a recreation of the iconic Miles Davis album, Kind of Blue, to celebrate 100 years since the legendary trumpeter’s birth.

On April 22nd, 1959, Miles Davis and his sextet recorded Kind of Blue at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City — an album that changed the course of jazz forever. Now, over six decades later, Kind of Blue – Live brings this landmark recording to life on stage, performed by a superb ensemble of jazz musicians dedicated to recreating its sound, spirit, and improvisational brilliance.

Originally launched in early 2020, the project overcame lockdown delays to return stronger than ever — selling out venues across the South and earning rave audience feedback.

“What a terrific concert by superb musicians. I like the vogue for recreating classic albums, and this was done perfectly — a nice selection of Davis bebop in the first half, then the album performed flawlessly in part two, with scored sections recreated exactly and fabulous improv that captures the mood of the album. Five stars”

Performing at this event:

Matt Ward – trumpet
Ian Ellis – tenor saxophone
Tom Gwyther – piano
Paul Francis – double bass
James Wheeler – drums
