Jazz at the Barn: Joy Ellis Quartet

27th November 2026 at 8:00pm
Jazz at the Barn turns five years old! This season, from September 2026 to July 2027, local musician Matt Ward invites guests to join us in celebration at the Barn Theatre for a gig list packed full of the UK’s top jazz musicians, young rising stars, as well as some familiar and favourite local faces along the way.
Join us on the 27th November to hear brand new music from top UK jazz pianist and vocalist, Joy Ellis, as part of her One Hundred Years album tour! Joy is often seen performing all over the UK, Hertfordshire included, with a roster of top jazz and classical musicians, with her “Fantastically wistful ambiance and beautiful voice” as described by Kevin Le Gendre, BBC Radio 3.

Joy Ellis is a pianist, singer and composer based in London. Joy has toured all over the UK supported by the Arts Council, England and Help Musicians UK performing her original music. Performance highlights include Manchester, Cheltenham and London Jazz Festivals, the Roundhouse in Camden and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. As a leader, Joy has released three critically acclaimed albums of her original compositions. Her most recent release ‘Peaceful Place’ was featured as Editor’s Choice in UK jazz periodical Jazzwise.

Joy is excited to release her fourth studio album entitled One Hundred Years in Autumn 2026. Her new compositions expand her established sound as a jazz piano-vocalist into a richer, orchestral context in collaboration with contemporary ensemble The Engine’s Orchestra. Her music fuses jazz harmony and improvisation with classical and groove-based influences, continuing her exploration of song-based contemporary jazz. Joy is heavily influenced by artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Camila Meza and Joni Mitchell.

“Fiery improvisations from Ellis who provides well-structured hard-bop solos on piano and Fender Rhodes.” John Lewis, The Guardian

Performing at this event:
  • Joy Ellis – piano and vocals
  • Mike De Souza – guitar
  • Jonny Wickham – double bass
  • Adam Osmianski – drums
