Violence and Son

By Gary Owen
Directed by John Davies
7th – 15th February 2020

A dark comedy of teenage love and adult stupidity

Swearing, explicit sexual references. Not suitable for children under 16. (more information here)

After his mother’s death, 17-year-old self-confessed geek Liam moves to Wales to live with his father Rick, a man he doesn’t know, has nothing in common with, and whose nickname is Violence. Liam fancies class-mate Jen, who seems willing to ditch her rugby-playing boyfriend in Liam’s favour, and as they return from a Doctor Who convention in Cardiff, Liam impersonating Matt Smith’s Doctor, and Jen as Amy Pond in a very short-skirted policewoman’s uniform, they try to find out whether the other one actually fancies them. Things take a more serious turn on the appearance of Rick and his live-in girlfriend Suze, and Rick’s advice to Liam on how to take things further leads to serious misunderstandings between the young couple. A play that starts as a light-hearted comedy ends up posing serious questions about consent, male attitudes, and the way women are still treated in our society.

‘Every teenager – and every recovering ex-teenager – should see this.’
– Daily Telegraph

‘A seriously good play; what is especially good is its downright condemnation of a bullying male ethos.’
– The Guardian
