FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

She Stoops to Conquer

by Oliver Goldsmith
Directed by Michael McKever
27th November – 4th December 1982

Mr Hardcastle’s spectacles by courtesy of Neil Roskrow, Optician. Wardrobe provided by Festival Workshop

This brilliant comedy of misunderstanding, clownish practical jokes and buffoonery was first performed, with immense success, at Covent Garden in 1773. It was the second and, alas, the last of Goldsmith’s work for the stage for he died the following year while only forty-six years old. His characters are however immortal, as identifiable today as when they were first created.
