FROM THE BARN THEATRE ARCHIVE

Dancing at Lughnasa

by Brian Friel
Directed by Beth Maxwell
24th November – 2nd December 1995

This play was first performed at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, and subsequently with great success in London and New York.

Set in a remote part of County Donegal in 1936, it features an impoverished family of five spinsters and their elder brother, a missionary priest returned from a long period in Africa. The events of that summer are recalled by the son of the youngest sister, in a tender, humorous and poignant evocation of the relationships within the household and with the community outside.

The Times said of this play “we are in the thrall of as masterly a dramatist as the theatre possesses”.
