Beth passed away peacefully at home in November 2023 at the age of 95.
Beth and Jim moved down from the Wirral to Barnet, Homestead Court, Parkway, Handside Lane and finally Guessens Road. So many of her happiest times here were spent at the Barn, directing more than a dozen plays. Highlights included sending David to the trenches in 1991 for Journey’s End, and Jim, Alun and Glyn to the Antarctic in 1993 for Terra Nova. Other memorable productions were Salad Days (1973), The Admirable Crichton (1984), Dancing at Lughnasa (1995) and Hobson’s Choice (1998), and Beth’s last contribution to a Barn show was as Vocal Coach for Under Milk Wood in 2010, the very play which had been the highlight of her professional career, as she starred in the Dylan Thomas classic in the West End and Broadway in 1956-57. She directed The Olde Tyme Music Hall on the Campus from 1967 to 1985, and taught at Applecroft School for many years.
The funeral will be held at St John’s Lemsford on Tuesday 12th December, at 11.30 am, and there will be a reception in the Barn clubroom from 1pm to 5pm. All are welcome.
