Alan Bennett’s The History Boys has played to critical acclaim throughout the world. It raises serious questions about the purpose of education and how history should be taught, but, via the character of the maverick teacher, Hector, it is full of Bennett’s intrinsic humanity. Above all, it is magnificently entertaining with its unforgettable one-liners and show-stopping vignettes.
