A Michael Caine classic movie

Barn Cine Club

Our last two films have had a ‘feelgood’ factor, so we thought we should go for something a little grittier in April! We are going to run the 1971 movie Get Carter, starring Michael Caine. This is quite a harsh film, brilliantly shot and acted in bleak locations in the northeast of England.

To summarise a review of the time:

‘Michael Caine has rarely looked cooler as the well-dressed heavy, attempting to uncover the facts behind the death of his brother, in this hard-boiled thriller. The film tracks Caine as he becomes embroiled in the sinister underworld of crime and pornography. John Osborne stars as the flesh peddlers’ ringleader, whilst sultry Bond girl Britt Ekland sizzles as Cain’s London girl. Get Carter’s powerful combination of violence and corruption, with its dark portrayal of England, especially Newcastle, signalled the end of the sugarcoated ‘60s, ushering in a more cynical style of film-making.’

Not to be missed – and it’s free!
