The War of the Worlds – a Journal

The making of the Minack production

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their originalproduction, Hertfordshire Players presented their film version of The War of the Worlds to open the 2018 Barn Fringe in September.

This was a hugely successful night with a full house comprising cast and crew there for a reunion – and a great mix of Barn members and public who were fans of the music or just wanted to see the show in its stunning Minack setting.

During the many conversations in the bar after the show, one common theme kept popping up: ‘How did you actually do that?’ Even cast and crew came out of the auditorium saying ‘I can’t believe we really did that’. It certainly would be a daunting prospect to put on a show on that scale even now, let alone 10 years ago when the Minack facilities were a fraction of what they are today. In answer to all those questions for everyone who was there on the night, or for those who are curious to see how a Minack show is actually put together, the film documentary The War of the Worlds – a Journal will be shown in the main auditorium at 8pm on Monday 26th November.

This is a full-length 90-minute documentary covering the whole production from its inception, through auditions, rehearsals and then its transfer and run at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. Edited by Rob Wallace and narrated by Paul Brown, the documentary also features interviews with Herts Players cast and crew plus loads of behind-the-scenes footage that really capture all the hard work and ingenuity that went into putting this show together.

This will be a Club Night so will be free to all Barn members and guests. So, if you enjoyed the film of the production and would like to see how it was all created, or if you’re just intrigued to know how a Minack show works, then please put 26th November in your diary and come along to the Barn to see this
fabulous documentary.
