Iron

By Rona Munro
Directed by David Smith, Nick Jackson
21st – 24th February 2024 at 8:00pm

Duration: Approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes; with a 20-minute interval.

A powerful psychological drama.

Emotionally honest and socially resonant, it transcends the melodramatic cliches of prison drama to explore the relationship between a mother and daughter and the corrosive nature of the penal system.

The Guardian

This production is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

Iron is a two-act play, set in a women’s prison, with a cast of four.

Josie is 25 and visiting her mother, Fay, for the first time in 15 years. She’s seeking answers to events that occurred when she was 10. Fay is now 45 and has served 15 years of a life sentence for murder. She’s trying to forget those same events Josie is seeking answers to.

This is a powerful psychological drama between mother and daughter regarding their respective lives back then to now, and how that event impacted on both of them – with Josie’s upbringing, prison has shaped Fay’s life with her daily encounters with two of her prison guards: George and Sheila, who are drawn into the encounter, with their own views on the realities of prison life, prisoners and families – both their own and the prisoners’.

There will be some extremely intense and disturbing scenes which highlight the realities of prison life for those who visit the prisoners, the prisoners themselves, and the warders.
