Jazz at the Barn: Lewis Sallows

31st January 2025 at 8:00pm

Another night of Jazz at the Barn Theatre in the comfortable environment of our bar.

For the first Jazz at the Barn gig of 2025, local musician Matt Ward invites guests to hear Ware-based saxophonist, improviser, and composer Lewis Sallows.

Lewis is an in-demand freelance musician, graduate of both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Previous projects range from the song-based Lewis Sallows Project, to his Crosswire Project – an ambitious, cross-disciplinary project combining jazz and landscape artwork. As an up-and-coming presence within the UK jazz scene, he has hosted weekly jam sessions at 1000 Trades and held a monthly residency at the Loft Lounge during four years living in Birmingham, through which he has performed with renowned musicians such as Percy Pursglove, Andy Panayi & Jay Phelps, also performing regularly with The Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

He is a very active composer, having written a suite of music for chamber orchestra and saxophone, inspired by the landscape artwork of Lawrence Coulson. This suite premiered alongside projections of Lawrence’s artwork in March 2019 at Centrala, in Birmingham. He writes for his own groups which perform in London and has had work performed at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Trondheim Jazz Festival in Norway and Elb Jazz Festival in Hamburg.

Lewis can currently be found performing across Hertfordshire, London, and the UK, both in small group settings with his quartet, as well as larger ensembles such as the impressive Olivia Murphy Jazz Orchestra.

“A young saxophonist of great quality, integrity, intelligence and talent.” – Mike Williams

“A powerfully dramatic imagination.” – Richard Williams, thebluemoment.com
