Jazz at the Barn: Luke Montgomery Quartet

30th January 2026 at 8pm

The best of Hertfordshire and London's jazz scenes in an intimate setting.

Jazz at the Barn is where the smooth, soulful, and swinging sounds of live jazz come alive in the heart of Welwyn Garden City. Each event brings together exceptional musicians – from acclaimed local talent to special guests from further afield – to create evenings filled with energy, artistry, and atmosphere.

Kicking off the second half of the season, local musician Matt Ward hosts virtuoso saxophonist Luke Montgomery and his quartet to Jazz at the Barn.

Born in South-East London, saxophonist and composer Luke Montgomery is a creative emerging talent. His playful approach to improvisation, combined with his lyrical melody playing and narrative-like compositions, are inspired by the likes of Dick Oatts, Kenny Garrett, and Paul Desmond.

Luke became hooked on jazz through playing the music of Charles Mingus in his school big band at age 12. Over a decade later, he has gone on to play and record with artists such as Julian Argüelles, Jasper Høiby and Iain Ballamy, with notable performances at Ronnie Scott’s, The Budapest Jazz Club, and Montreux Jazz Festival. Luke can also be heard on the Ivor Novello nominated Taproots album, composed and directed by Dan Mar-Molinero.

Performing at this event:

Alto Saxophone – Luke Montgomery
Piano – Edward Wren
Double Bass – George Balmont
Drums – Noam Solomons-Wise
