Jazz at the Barn: Ward/Dawkins Quintet

10th October 2025 at 8:00pm

An evening of hard-hitting swing, bop, and Latin standards.

For the second gig of the season, local musician Matt Ward brings to the Barn Theatre his own quintet, co-led with tenor saxophonist Jack Dawkins. By popular demand, musicians from Jazz at the Barn’s first season return for an evening of hard-hitting swing, bop, and Latin standards, uniquely arranged for trumpet and tenor sax formation.

Friends and musical colleagues, Matt and Jack first met as part of the award-winning Hertfordshire Big Band, of which Matt is now the Musical Director, and have since gone on to perform together in a number of ensembles across Hertfordshire and London. Notable appearances together include gigs at Pizza Express Live, Luton’s The Bear Club, as well as at the King’s Langley Jazz Club, Watford Jazz Junction Festival, and Googlies Jazz Club in Enfield.

Their set at the Barn will present some of their favourite jazz standards and lesser-known works, and audiences can expect to hear featured numbers for all the quintet’s members, made up of some of Hertfordshire’s finest gigging musicians.

Performing at this event:

Trumpet/Flugelhorn – Matt Ward
Tenor Saxophone/Clarinet – Jack Dawkins
Piano – Russell Williams
Double Bass – Laurence Evans
Drums – Laurence Leedell
