Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah! That’s how it goes!

Oliver! is the perfect musical for our credit crunch times, packed with unhealthy school dinners, growing poverty and kids drawn to gang culture and crime. It will steal your heart. Please sir, can I have some more?

Bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart’s Oliver! takes audiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Join young, orphaned Oliver Twist as he navigates London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and – most importantly – love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, he’s welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin. When he’s falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, Oliver is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman, to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sikes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who’s trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results. With spirited, timeless songs such as As Long as He Needs Me, Food, Glorious Food, and Where Is Love?Oliver! is a musical classic.

Oliver! secured a combined total of 19 Academy Award nominations, the most nominations for musicals from one studio in a year.

His (Bart’s) Oliver! remains as good and revivable as anything he wrote.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Statement

At the Barn we are committed to promoting equality and challenging discrimination in all its forms. We strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the cast and creative team, regardless of their race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity and will not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

Oliver!

Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist did have racist overtones in the form of Fagin’s characterisation which the musical adaption does not dwell on and indeed the author himself tries to eliminate in his own script narrative. This production will also not continue to make Fagin’s heritage a harmful stereotype. As the play is based on Dickens’ work, there are some characters that require being played by certain genders to remain authentic to both authors’ work, however for the majority of casting there is no diversity stipulation and therefore we welcome a mixed cast of all ages, ethnicities and genders.
