Comedy at the Barn

15th April 2011 at 19:30:00

Matt Price, Christian Steel, Barry from Watford and Pete Callaghan

Your host for the evening, James Redmond, is a dry, slick and subtle stand-up, who delivers unexpected twists and turns during his set as he deconstructs his art. He has a track record as a model and an actor and is best known for seminal roles in Hollyoaks (C4) and Casualty (BBC1), as well as having presented CD UK alongside Cat Deeley. He has also appeared as a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (BBC2), Celebrity Who Wants Top Be A Millionaire (ITV1) and Soccer AM (Sky1).

Opening the show is a favourite on the comedy circuit, Christian Steel. As an actor, he was offered the male lead in The Graduate in the West End, opposite Jerry Hall, but turned it downto play Peter ‘Geordie’ Gardener in BBC’s Second World War film, Night Flight, alongside Christopher Plummer and Edward Woodward. He then went on to film Channel 4’s Shackleton with Kenneth Branagh (HBO/CH4Films) – living on an ice-breaker in the North Pole for five months – and was guest star in Born and Bred (BBC1) as Mr Manley, alongside James Bowlam. He has also played the lead in Hell in the Falklands (Radio 4). Theatrical engagements include performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Coriolanus and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Last year he took the show The Jew, the Muslim, the Christian and the Geordie to the Edinburgh Festival, getting fab reviews and packing out the venue every day. “Christian Steel? His fastpaced Geordie delivery was just outstanding, using a good combo of his own material and audience participation.” (edfringe.com). Since starting stand-up, he has moved up through the ranks fast, and now headlines clubs all over Europe, as far afield as Finland. He was one of the Amused Moose “HOT STARLETS” for 2006/7, the Otherside Club Finalist 2008 and Hackney Empire Finalist 2008.

Middle act is Radio 2 favourite, Barry from Watford. On May 22nd 2009, he was featured on BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright in the Afternoon show, talking about his life, with much emphasis on his role as a lifestyle guru! He is now a regular weekly contributor to the programme. In April 2010, he recorded a comedy pilot for BBC Radio 2, The Alex Lowe Double Act, with impressionist Alistair McGowan. This saw the debut of Barry’s wife Margaret, later to be voice played by Catherine Tate in Barry’s stage show.

The fantastic headline act is Matt Price, probably the most versatile comedian in the UK and International comedy circuit. Matt is described as being “a great story teller” and “a very funny MC”, with “the ability to entertain by just being himself.” Matt is a regular headliner and MC at all the big clubs and is a favourite amongst promoters and agencies alike. Recently, tours around Europe and Dubai have seen Matt demonstrate his diverse style on an international level. Matt is almost unbookable due to his super-high demand on the circuit, so The Barn is lucky to have him headline this event.

Also on the bill is local favourite Pete Callaghan, who you may remember from our first Comedy Night last December (the Barn News reviewer praised his “good material.”)

Tickets are priced at £11.
